I have a Nikon D90 and I'm trying to take a picture of my family with the sunset in the backdrop at the beach. How do you take a picture using flash and without exposing the shot when you have the sun in the background? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The D90 will use TTl quite well (better with an off-camera flash than the on-camera one). Meter the sunset, transfer those settings to the camera in manual mode, pop up your flash (or use the off camera unit), and shoot the scene, the flash will fill your subjects and the background will be properly exposed for the sunset.

Judging by your online handle I'm guessing you are a Jar Head? If I guessed correctly, Semper Fi and welcome aboard the USS Ugly Hedge Hog. ;)

That's what I would do. If you want it to look more light matched you need to gel with a 1/4 to 1/2 CTO on your flash.

An orange film that covers your flash (color temperature orange)
Can be used when the sun get low on the horizon to help balance the orange of the sun. It is often used indoor for balancing incandescent warm bulb light.

A good sight to visit for you is

Lots of information on speedlight flash.

I keep a half CTO on one of my speedlights all the time.

I know that when using CTO indoors you would set for tungsten WB. How about outdoors what WB do you normally use with a half CTO.
