NOT a true macro lens.
"A minimum focusing distance of 13.8” at all focal lengths & produces a maximum magnification radio of 1:2.9"
per http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/18-250mm-f35-63-dc-macro-os-hsm

1:2.9 mag = 1/3 life-size. True macro is a minimum of 1:1 magnification (life-size).

I am aware of the macro limitations, and have read some reviews, but I am interested to hear from some UHHers that may have used this lens.

I use this lens as my main all-purpose lens. It has limitations, but for most situations it is a good lens. When going to new place that I do not have much information about, it is the go to lens.

What are the specific limitations are you speaking of?
I'm concerned about sharpness.

It is sharp. Not being a true macro lens don't expect to get the close. It is on the heavy side so hand holding might be difficult. It is not the fastest lens so you might want to conssider monopod or tripod. I find this lens to work well in many situations. There is never going to be one lens that will give you true macro, wide angles, and long zoom. 18-20 is still pretty wide, and you can get good sharp close-up images, and 250 zoom is adequate.
