What else is there to do between 4 & 5 AM?

Woke up early this morning. Looked at the clock and figured I could just kill a couple of hours on facebook, but decided to do something more productive.

Kid's winter break is coming up fast and I have offered my sister-in-law a family portrait. Going to print it and have it framed. My payment will be her posing for me as I attempt a glamour shoot.

I am also going to shoot a friends daughters before they re-deploy.

Needless to say, I'm practicing with my gear every free moment.

I've got these ideas and I am my own test model.

So this morning's shoot was done in a narrow hall. I hung black fabric at one end. My umbrella was a bit higher than my head(not high enough I think, but it barely fit in the hall.

Nothing really worked so I switched to the grid. Second fail.

Then I used the bare flash to do a wall/ceiling bounce and put the black side of my reflector on the wall across from me.

One usable shot is all I got.

Opinions?

BTW, my new shoot through umbrella should be here tomorrow. My next test shots will be using that. If money allows, I plan on adding another light stand and a cheap optical slave. Or better yet, something that has more control than my Nissin 622 II and use that as a slave.

Nice shot. Even light and no harshness noted.

Keep up the good work.

Nice muted colours and tightly cropped; good. Beats taking a sleeping pill doesn't it?

Henry, I thought your self portrait was perfect to apply the Dragan effect to. This is sometimes also referred to as the "300" effect from the movie a couple years back. Whatchathink?

Excellent portrait, don't see how the lighting could have been any better.

If I might say without offense, tho, you look rather weary. Relax, have a good laugh, get a good night's sleep and take care of yourself, all those folks on welfare are depending on you!
