I use a combination of Canon camera, EF 70-200 2.8L IS lens and processing software to shoot sports under lights. A lot of experimentation goes into each game, because every field has its on lighting situations. Procedure at the game: shoot, check the window, histogram, etc make adjustments. I usually start at manual, at least 125 @ 2.8 (higher shutter speed is better) ISO at whatever works to get a high shutter speed. When I get home My processing software allows a two stop(btw I always shoot in RAW) adjustment which brings up the exposure up to 2 stops. hopes this gets you started!

Ditto to Pierce but be prepared to part with lots of $$$ for a lens for what you want. 85 f1.8 or 1.4 may work for what you're doing. I shoot a lot of HS volleyball/basketball pix in RAW and usually use a 50mm f1.8 or 28-75 f2.8 depending on gym lighting and then post process and crop to what I want. Haven't taken any outdoor night sports though.

I agree with Kenneth about the lens. I shoot mainly soccer photos and low lighting is always an issue with early evening games. I believe you would do best with a fixed aperture with a varied mm to capture football because the players are all over the field and a prime lens may not get the best results. It does cost a good chunk of change but if you are looking at years of shooting sports photography it will be worth it. I wish I had started out with that lens first but went a cheaper route with a canon F4.0-5.6L 70-300mm IS lens which is a great lens on sunny well lighted days but doesn't handle low lighted fast paced shots without some blur or ramping up the ISO which results in some noise. I am now contemplating the 2.8L lens as well.

I shoot night baseball with the Tamron 70-200 2.8 and it seems to do the job adequately. I'll be bringing it into the gym this fall for basketball and eventually gymnastics. Gyms are not a photographers best friend but I know it can be done with this lens because I've seen others results. Good luck with your search.........

If you are not on the sidelines, but in the stands, more telephoto is better. You might find used 300/2.8 lenses around, some might be manual focus, but that is just a skill to learn, how to focus fast, manually.
