Well, the poll is probably unscientific but with that many reporting problems on one site it is clear that Nikon must be well aware of the issue. Their silence is deafening.

A really great find Wabbit. Thanks. This is the first real data i have seen on the subject. The disheartening part is it that it seems to be happening throughout the entire range of production. If there is anything good at all here is that it appears as if the problem falls off as production continued into the higher numbers.
Deafening for sure and not at all smart.

Chances are...they did know and they will try to quitely resove the issue. Same thing when cars are recalled, sometimes you hear about them, sometimes you don't. The manufacturer does everything they can to keep it quiet.

Hey Doc ..... I spoke with Nikon yesterday morning (631-542-4200) .....

..... we had a very nice conversation, the skinny is ..... compared to the number of D600's sold the complaints about oil and dust are miniscule so far .....

..... the alleged space around the curtain has not been confirmed as a design flaw or that it even exists ..... if it does in may not be on every example .....

That does not surprise me. It may well be true as the larger majority of buyers don't participate in forums like this and are simply unaware. Many would never notice spots. Many won't use their camera enough to build up a noticable amount. Many will think, if they do see noticabel amounts, will believe it is their fault for getting the sensor dirty.

It also may be the case that no one is telling truth to those answering the phone.

It could also be the case that the person answering the phone has been told the "corporate position" to replay when asked.

It is clear by now that Nikon does not want to address the problem publically. Neither would most of the car makers if not forced to do so by laws and the press. Look at how long it took Toyota to own up to the accelerator problem.
