I don't use the strap very often. Like Esther, I use a harness. In addition to saving my neck, it keeps the camera closer to my body so it does not flop around when I need both hands for climbing up or down a steep embankment.

When I am out and about the camera is always on the harness except when on my tripod. Since I frequently shoot waterfalls and often shoot near the water, I am trying to figure out a way to tether the camera to me in case the tripod should slip or I knock it over. So far I use the strap. but I am looking for something better.

You are right there and in the case of having an extremely heavy lens attached I would not have the camera hanging from my dtrapped hand at my side nor from my neck on a strap. In cases like that my other hand would be supporting the lens, I would have the strapping on just in case of a fall or in case the camera or lens would slip out of my grasp. In all cases we must think before we handle our equipment and follow common sense. Accidents can happen but they can also be prevented.

I have the: "Custom SLR C-Loop Camera Strap Mount With Adjustable Cushioned Neck Strap." View it and read its reviews on Amazon. Most who purchased it view it quite favorably. The mount is an ingenious piece of engineeringÂ…..sort of. I don't like the excessive dangling//twirling of the camera caused by the degrees of freedom inherent in this combination of strap and mount design. ln consequence, if I expect to do a lot of walking/walking before raising the camera to eye level, I connect the strap to my belt loop with a carabiner. Even then, quick release from the strap is possible. It's a strap and mount combination worthy of consideration.

I love my Black Rapid strap. I have never used my camera without a strap of some kind. You just never know what might happen.

I like the comfort and the security of the hand strap. Put my hand through and click into place for my DSLR.

I use this strap from Black Rapid and love it. It goes across the chest and then you pull your camera up to shoot.

While shooting with some savvy friends recently I noticed that they did not have straps attached to their cameras. To be fair we were all using tripods and not hiking far from the vehicle. That said, what are the choices of this group? Keep strap on or off? Or does it depend? I keep mine on but sometimes it is annoying on the tripod. And final question, what kind of strap do you prefer, the one that came with the camera or a third party brand?

Thanks in advance.

Ditto what most others said: PO/Tech straps with quick release buckles. When I pick up the camera the strap goes around my neck. If the camera is on a tripod I remove the strap and replace it before removing the camera from the tripod. Leaving the strap attached on the tripod seems to be asking for trouble - like a cat in a room full of rockers.

I have my straps color coded so I know what camera to pick up at a glance.

What Jerry said,
Always have a strap on camera, even on tripod. I just secure the strap to the tripod.( Velcro is cheap) When carrying the camera the strap on over the neck, on trails, in the woods, on the rocks it is easy to slip and if your camera is in your hands and you need to support your self and the camera is in your paw, it can be a very expensive fall.
Also handy to color code straps if you have multiple bodies
Quick ID from across the room
