In a few months I will retire from my job in a Boston hospital, and look forward to much more photography for both personal enjoyment and professional advancement. Over the past couple of months I have upgraded my camera and lens kits (Still getting paychecks!) and have come as close to photo Nirvana as I expect to be. Learning to use a new D800, with grip and Nikkor 28-300 to its full potential. Video will have a long learning curve for this "old dog". With the D300 backup with a Sigma 18-200, I can walk around pretty confidently. Still have a good selection of fast zooms and primes to cover most needs> I anticipate using the D300 frequently where the capabilities (and weight!!) of the 800 are not needed.
Only two things left on my list...Sell my D200 with a Sigma 18-200 and get out and shoot more photos! Life is good!

Right! Why rush into things? I hear the D900 is going to be fantastic.

I recently bought my last set of camera bodies and lenses before my retirement. I bought 2 of the D800 and some lenses. am keeping my 2 canon 7d and lenses. figure I got less than 2 years before I retire. Maybe I will learn how to use them before retirement.

enjoy your retirement.

Yes I think 2 D800 to go with our D4s will make good backups

Congrats on your soon-to-be joining the Retirement Gang. My first treats were all in photog/travel, too. Unfortunately, with even more time to ponder and USE all your goodies, you will be spending more of your fixed income on photog goodies. But, these are the sacrifices we oldies have to make.

Good planning on getting that GoodStuff - actually, WOW - and planning ahead for retirement as we are cautioned to do. Nice choices. I see more fun in your future!

Al, I also bought the D800, selling a D3 and D300 because the 800 replaced both (look at the 800's DX function). The only thing I miss is a back up which I really dont' need.
I had the 3 and 300 because, in my mind, they complimented each other and each was better than the other in certain circumstances. Now, the one 800 does what it took the other two to do.

Like you,I could do everything with the 800, but must have a second camera for backup.

Retired back in June and planned and bought before this life event a D800 and a 28-300 which to me is the perfect couple for this camera. As a back up I already had the D7000 with an 18-200mm. I upgraded the lens to the 18-300mm. Took the D800/28-300 to a long River cruise in Europe, took both cameras recently to Asheville for the change of leaves, then departed to a wedding in Puerto Vallarta with the D800/28-300mm. I have enrolled already in three different photography courses to continue to improve my techniques now that I have plenty of time.
Glad to see that other colleagues are planning ahead to enjoy their passion.

What courses are you taking? That's always a popular question here. Let us know how you like them.

Enjoy your retirement while you can. Soon you will have find so many new things to do/try that you will wonder how you ever had time for work and that doesn't include the to-do list your wife has been accumulating for you over the years. ;)
