Hi all. Gday etc.
So, a little too close to xmas for a service at canon and a much loved and used 50D chucks a wobbly. I get the dreaded err 01!!! Which states: 'communication between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts.'
I am using the lens that came with the camera - 20-135 IS USM. It and the camera are now 2.5yrs old and get used every day.

So, I have used alcohol wipes and an eraser (we call them rubbers here LOL). I have read such stuff on the internet elsewhere and have tried all settings. At present the camera works on AV at the lowest F stop only - if I change F stops it wobbles again. So when I put a different lens on - my gorgeous Sigma 10-20mm - it works fine.

So it must be the lens!!! Any further suggestions?

Canon...junk!!

Just giving you a hard time. I don't have a clue but if you be a little patient someone will come up with an idea.
If not we have a repairman here on the forum that repairs cameras, lens, anything techy. His name is Rick Riggins. He's been doing it for thirty years. He works out of his home so his overhead is low and so are his prices. He has repaired camera for many on this forum, including me. He has always done a good job as far as I know. He lives in Denver. He has a web site. Here's a link:

good luck

Here is a link to consider if you are brave. I would first try another lens to eliminate the camera contacts and see if that works. Best of luck. Gary

I had the same problem. As I understand it, the lens has a finite number of clicks at which point the contacts wear down. It isn't something one can see and cleaning the contacts won't help either. I ended up buying another lens but you also have the option of sending your lens to Canon for repair.

I would send the lens and camera body to Canon.

Oh my gosh I have been waiting for someone to mention this problem. I have the same error with my 17-85 Is lens on my Canon 60D. I have tried all the same things you have. Sometimes I can take 50 pics. no problem. Next time I put it on, its the first pic that gets the error. I can't afford just to throw out this lens. Sob, sob. I'm going to wait until after Christmas and take the lens in for repair, fingers crossed. I also have the Canon Xsi and does the same thing on it. I'ts a bit scary considering the prices we pay for Canon lenses. Any advise would be great. Thank you in advance. Judy

Don't know if this will help, to clean contacts use CD cleaner it doesn't leave residue behind. Maybe spray onto quality tissue first, then wipe. Use this process elsewhere when electrical contact is important.

Hi guys. I figure it's the lens because the camera works fine with my 10-20mm wide angle. Trouble is I can't afford a new lens and I can't use the wide angle all the time!!! Bugger. I can't see how the contacts would wear down. I could count on 4 hands the number of times I have changed my lenses over so that can't be the cause of it. Bugger!!!
Gwong1 - I am NOT doing that!!!!LOL
I'm sure it's the lens as I use it all the time and things are a bit loose now. Bugger!!!

Hey, I am of the faint of heart and would not do that as well. If you think it may be your lens, I found this link, perhaps you can repair the lens. Gary http://www.photobooksonline.com/books/manual01CANLENS.html

Thanks for that mate. Yes I was thinking I may pull it apart. My wife did that once to her father's lens. She took pics of each step so she could reverse the process. Worked well. Suppose it's worth a shot.
