Was talking to a friend the other day about FF vs DX DSLRs. He is thinking about buying a FF camera. I told him the price of FF cameras was slowly coming down and after we talked a while he looked at me and asked "what are you going to do with all your DX stuff when they finally make all DSLRs FF. I told him that I wasn't worried that DX DSLRs was here to stay. However, later on I got to thinking about it and now am not so sure. What do the folks on UHH think? :?:

There are different cameras at different price points. Crop sensors meet one of those price points and will be here for awhile.

I would not worry about it until your camera body wears out. Then see what the market is offering.

NOTHING technology-based that you buy today will remain current after 5 to 10 years. Sometimes after just a few years.

Buy it, use it , wear it out and then look forward to newer models and features.

Things are no longer the way there were.

I would not worry just yet-the Mfgs need low, middlehigh markets, PS, mid-range & high end products & customers. Not everyone wants a DSLR. Enjoy it while you can, it MAY change!

I think that DSLRs have a limited life. They are an anachronism. There is no need for a mechanical mirror or shutter. They will go away. Both have already disappeared on some types of cameras. That applies to both FX and DX DSLRs.

Larger sensors will always be able to collect more light with less noise. That is a physcial fact. There will always be a market for faster low noise cameras although perhaps at less of a premium as the smaller sensor technology improves.

Smaller sensors will always be less expensive than larger sensors. Larger sensors also drive more expensive periphials; i.e. cameras and sensors. So there will be a market for both size sensors for a long time to come.

That's my current belief anyway.

Good stuff. But may I challenge your current beliefs for a minute?
Physically smaller sensors may not always be cheaper.

Consider the sensors we use in today's DSLRs continue to capture more detail with every new model while their physical size remains unchanged.

Then consider the human eye - lens system and sensor. The system we use to judge our photo and there quality. Technology will get there and then past it faster than we think.
Soon our cameras will be able to take pictures that are better that we can appreciate with just our eyes.

I believe that the most expensive cameras may be the ones with a smaller new generation sensor that out performs everything we have today.
While larger (old technology) sensors will drop in price (like LCD and plasma screens).

I don't know this. But I'm not buying any Hasselblad stock, and I noticed that many professionals now prefer to rent their Hassleblads versus buying them.... is that a harbinger?

Not collecting. Just eating. (the smaller one is Nikonian's.)
