A friend of mine recommended this device. I know it's discontinued on the B&H website because it doesn't work well with digital cameras due to pre-flash.

Does anyone use a device like this with their digital camera setup? If so, would you recommend one? If you are confused about what I'm talking about, here is a link:

It works great, but I use Pocket Wizards (or Radio Poppers, etc.) to transmit ETTL to my strobes, not the rapid flash coded sequence now common in recent DSLRs. If you turn off ETTL and set up manually, it also works well.

I found that with ETTL, it only detected the rapid flashes when it was pointed directly at the camera. If you turn it away, it will ignore the rapid flash sequences but will trigger reliably when the main flash illuminates your subject (reflectance).

I have yet to buy the new "digital camera" units, but I suspect that they have a duration delay or some other type of filtering to ignore the rapid strobe pulses.

I have an old Wein HS model that works fine with my Canon system, but I rarely use it. Instead, I found FlashZebra.com has more reliable hotshoe and optical slaves that work well with Canon flashes. For Canon flashes, I use the flash hotshoe Item#0135 paired with the optical slave Item#0127. They use the more rugged mini-phone jack.

Here's the link to their products: http://flashzebra.com/products.shtml

Scroll to the bottom of their page and look under "Hotshoe and Shoe Adapters" then "Flash Hotshoe" for Item#0135. Under "Optical Slaves," you can find Item#0127.

Of course, if you have Nikon or other products, then you can find similar products.

I have one that looks like the B&H model. No problems so far.

I mentioned that my Wein HS is an old (over 10 years?) version and reliable. But, I've read others who complain that the new Weins are not reliable. I don't know if that's true or not, but it was reason enough for me to switch to another brand.

I'm glad you're not going to whine over it. :D

That's the new twice-the-price for digital flash model.
