I am planning to purchase some new lenses for my Canon camera and was wondering if I should purchase a lens for a full frame or the EF-S lenses which do not work on all Canon cameras. I have a T1i now and planning to purchase a T3i or 60D. I don't want to buy lenses that I will have to rid of in a couple of years like my old FD lenses. Thanks for any advice.

The EF lenses will fit any EOS camera. the EFs only fit on the 1.6 crops.. Canons top L glass is only found in EF mounts..

It's a personal choice.. EFs lenses are smaller and more compact since they are designed to produce a smaller field-of-view at the smaller crop sensor, so if you are on a bidget this may be a factor...

However.. Canon has just announced that their top-end 1D series cameras will all be full-frame (the 1Dx), and now that that technology is more prevalent, it is only a matter of time before more/most DSLR's will become full-frame. If you desire one of these later on, EF is the way to go..

Chuck Westfall, (head of development at Canon) when announcing the latest pro DSLR said to not rule out the Crop 1.3 sensor in future models. For several years Canon has offered a 1D 1.3 crop sensor as well as a 1Ds full frame sensor. This will most likely continue as sports and nature photographers prefer a crop sensor . Similarly Canon will probably continue manufacturing the 1.6 crop sensor on their consumer and prosumer camera as well as a full frame sensor in their 5D model. The introduction of several EFs lenses in the recent past does not indicate any slowdown in cop sensor camera. Go ahead and buy your 60D if it meets your needs. Nobody makes a full frame sensor in the consumer-prosumer cameras and that is not likely to change anytime soon.

Thanks for the information. I need to do some more reading.. I wonder when Canon will introduce another new model...
60d came out 8/2010.. I hate to upgrade today then find out tomorrow a new model is coming out. I have the Canon XSi--- since I am not a professional my purchase is for enjoyment- I am not under a gun to upgrade.

When new models are released, the early models don't suddenly begin to take inferior images.. It's a bit like new fashions each year. Camera manufactures need to sell new products to survive, so they are frequently changing the cosmetics while the inner workings remain fairly stable.. A 60D would be a good purchase..

I realize this but I might "need" (haha) the new stuff they put on the newest addition---I have the XSi and love it.. I like the speed and 18mgp on the 60d.. I can do without the tilt screen.

I have a T2i, but seriously considering the Canon "L" series lense. It is on the higher price side, it is there premier line, but you'll be able to use it for the T3i, 60D, 5D Mark II and 7D if you wish to upgrade. There are a lot of people that can help you on this site and I would sugess you take your time and do extensive research as to what lense you wish to purchase.

I use the Canon EOS 5D Mark II full frame camera and am very pleased with it. It requires the EF lens. You can purchase this camera for much less that the 1D versions.
