I try to take pics in the gym during basket games but, my pics don't turn out well. Can someone help me with my settings. I have a D90 with the kit lens and a 70-300. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

You need a much better lens for one thing, your 70-300mm is just too slow for the job you want it to do.

Get a better lens, 70-200mmF2.8 with or without IS. This topic has been discussed numerous times on the site. We also have a sports section to the board, check it out!

You are using on camera flash only? If so, you can get for low cost slaves that have switches to allow ignoring for pre-flashes ($15*). The kit lenses well work well**, sure there are those who will tell you that you need a bigger (f-stop) lens, expensive flashes, and contribute to the TParty to get good photos.... BULL... oops. Gym and is Sports... to this ol guy Gym is fitness center..... by the time I finished my coffee and got back to this reply you guys posted all those Basketball photos.... well my answer is OK for "fitness center gym... so yes,,, hot flashes and big lens for Gymnasium active sports. I withdraw my "bull"

PS: you may want a CPF to take the glare off of the equipment (not so really good for metal ?? or is it)

* Check out the Zeikos ZE-DS12 Digital Slave on Amazon. Great little fill slaves with pre-flashes switch. Running about $6. Fill the area of interest with multi smaller flashes so as not to burn any one area with harsh lighting.

** How many times have we discussed that the photographer and their composition and control of the light is the main necessity for a great photo? Yep, a lot!

I remember I was at Best Buy and was talking to salesperson in the camera department, she said they were to up sell the 70-300 as a sport lens and they called it a soccer mom lens. They push it and they don't carry the 70-200mmF2.8. It was funny that her lens of choice for sports was the 70-200mmF2.8 but she wasn't allowed to talk about it.

Happens to me too. I really should wait until after I have had my morning mug of coffee. I first started to write to inform you that though the post you provided was excellent as usual but you were off-point! Then I read it again and found I was too...

Well, as the old saying goes DB7423 at times early in the morning we tend to "Pee outside the bowel" my reply was just such... but one must admit, I redirected and after filling my boot (like that great scene in Cheech & Chong where Cheech filled the border petrol's boot) I finally hit the bowel saying I was wrong for a Basket ball game.
