I'd consider a different angle and background. I realize he's a pet but, the wood shavings is so unnatural and bland. Holding the snake or having another object in the photo would give the viewer a perspective of it's size. Shooting from eye level or lower angle would be a more natural level for a shot of a snake. If you pre-focus to a spot you anticipate him reaching it will be easier to get sharper images. Also, consider shooting with a high shutter speed and in high synch (or burst) mode then you'll probably have a higher percentage of sharper images. A second option but, not necessarily the best: If your camera has the following auto-focusing mode: Al Servo AF changing to this mode will allow you to track focus on a moving subject. I use Canon, different cameras may have another name for the same mode. Unfortunately, I spend more time reading than taking pictures. Getting sleepy but, those are my ideas. Okay one last one; photograph the snake on a piece of wood or a rock. These are natural habitats for snakes. Put it's (dead) food on the wood and possibly take pictures of him eating (LOL).

Another thing to keep you busy is to try and get the tongue. I play with the garden snakes here when I see them. Always good to see them and have them in their natural back grounds.
