We were at a restaurant this evening that had cotton candy on their dessert menu. So my son asked me to take a macro of it to see what it looks like. This is after he compressed it somewhat with his fingers. :)

That's interesting but the colours need teasing out to give more range of sites to draw the viewer's eye. The way you do that is to put it into a graphics editor (I've used Nikon's Capture NX2 on your photo) and then screw around with the diagonal line across the histogram. See the screen grab below and note all the squiggles in the usually straight line and also note the different points I've placed along the line. This technique causes all the colours to go haywire and helps differentiate between close colour points as in your original pink foam. This idea does have a scientific use... by bringing out small differences in colour it is very helpful in outlining faded prehistoric rock paintings, for instance.

And none of it looks like anything I'd want to put into my mouth.
