This was my first attempt at a major re-do in Photoshop.
I removed the ear tags, radio collar and the background, then cropped. It took hours! Is there a quick way to remove large amounts of background?

Nice. I saw these guys over at the Okonaluftee visitor center but they didn't cooperate. Wouldn't turn to me. I do think I like it better with background.

Nice job! More background and then blur the background.

I agree with Eugene - other than the post sticking up out of his withers, I would leave it in - it's a great capture!

Oh, and someone said if you whistle, they'll look - just be quick - when they spot you, it might be look & book !

BBNC,

I do like both the one with background and the edited, with your permission Id like to edit your edit if I could to demonstrate an affect you may (or may not) like. It would take me a long time to describe what I am thinking about.

#1 is a nice photo as is but if you want a different look move your camera to the left a little so the elk is not dead center and pick up more fence line on the left. You don't need to make the background go away altogether. In PS select the elk then inverse select so you can work on the background but don't overdo it. Just under expose the background a little the add a touch of gausian blur that way you keep some of the natural colors and your focal point still stands out a bit. I would scrap # 2 and try again so he doesn't look like he's already been to the taxidermist. The more time you spend on PS the better you will get. Please post your fix when you finish. I think it will be a good one.

Not sure I have it right. It's a Cherokee word. The river on that side of the mountain has the same name.
