OMG!, I can't believe it!. George Bush has emerged as the voice of reason on Immigration Reform.
Maybe there is hope, after all.

Bush served as Governor of Texas before he became president. He probably understands the immigration problem better than people that have not lived in a border state. After living in Tucson, AZ. for four years I know that my views on immigration changed.

The immigration system is well, it does not need healing. Employment Laws need to be enforced before our economy tanks completely.

letmedance, you are the first person whom I have ever seen, or heard, defend the immigration system. I must assume that you do not live in a border State. You should come and visit the border before you make foolish statements like that above.

From what I am seeing, there is already reform to the legal way. that takes paperwork and a lot of time.
The current method being promoted by the WH - is come over the border illegally and be classed as an 'undocumented immigrant'. Now they can get drivers licences so they can drive to work.

I am not as worried about the undocumented workers as I am about Middle Eastern Terrorists and drug trafficing. Everyone is aware of the drug problem but the terrorist problem is kept quiet.

Jolly1 ,
I live in Los Angeles, right in the middle of what I call little Tijuana. I am well aware of our problem which is costing Citizens jobs. Several million Illegals in the workforce, most often as day labor or under the table employees. The Immigration system is fine, Border enforcement is poor at best. One cannot put blame on the Illegal aliens, They are just trying to improve their sort in life. I can however blame the Administrations, both local and national for not enforcing the law. Enforcement of Employment law would help, those unable to find gainful work would have to return to their own country to survive. I for one am damn tired of Political correctness ruling the country, an illegal is an illegal not an undocumented worker. I am tired of politicians such as Antonio Viaragossa, our Mayor, trying to make the city a Sanctuary City. Our elected Administrative officials are supposed to enforce the Law, not rewrite it. If you want to heal the economy then simply send the illegals home , there are more working illegals than there are unemployed.
End of Rant

Sometimes wise men do need a kick in the ass to wake them up. The Republican Party is in need of a kick in the ass right now.

I like your comments and you are right that they are just trying to better their lives. I would do the same thing if I were in their shoes. The border needs to be locked down to stop the flow and then we'll have to deal with the illegals that are here. The border can be locked down with enough troups, the Mexican government did it in 1880 to stop the Indians and Outlaws from raiding into Mexico. It would seem that if they are established and hard working a "Path to Citizenship" is logical as you probably can't deport everyone.

How can we know if our laws work or not until we actually enforce them? Let's enforce the laws that are on the books now and then decide what we need to add, remove or change. This whole idea of elected officials getting into office and then only enforcing the part of the law they agree with and re-writing the parts they don't is nothing short of abuse of power. We have come to the point in America where we elect kings and queens that rule in accordance to what they deem appropriate. Every time a new king or queen is elected we go through dramatic change and wonder why our country has become so unstable.

All I know is that if our country is to last another 250 years, its future will be written by those we currently label as immigrants and minorities and as far as I can see they are as resilent and motivated as our founders were to create a great nation "where all can have an opportunity to prosper" (if you're not familiar with that phrase, look it up under 'American Dream').
I just wonder how history will remember the citizens of our current era and how they handled immigration reform.

If you had ever been along the border with Mexico you would understand why a handful of Border Patrol Agents can't possibly patrol the vast stretches of land.

Okay I'm all for reform, my question is from what to what? Our current policy seems to be just do whatever you can get away with.
