I am so confussed why a person has a I pod or smart phone & takes a perfect picture in the worse conditions.

I've been trying to shoot with my Nikon D90 with a 18-135mm lens in the dark of city lights, christmas light, monuments and fast moving things in very low lights and I get terrible blurry pictures. Ive tried Mono pod, high ISO, and fast shutter speeds, even flash. Nothing works how can I get the right combinations. I'm going blind here.;)

Hi ahzwizerd2, I took a lot of pic's in London while on a moving (most of the time) tour bus. The only way I found to take the pic's was by shooting head on when approaching the subject or by panning when I would have to change the shutter speed if I had the time.

If it's ok I can put a couple on yr post to show you what they turned out like?

Ahzwizerd, I read recently that even the very first iPhones will out shoot a Nikon, hey, just kidding!
What makes you think that all these kids with iPhones are shooting for Nat'l Geo? They're not, but they are happy with what they get. I have an iPhone and use it in a pinch, and believe you me, I would not trade my DSLR for it. I will say, sometimes when I'm having trouble getting a shot in difficult light, I will use that little green square and am almost always surprised at how well it shoots. Makes me want to stay on it sometimes.
I think your question was rhetorical. But if you want to be sure, get an iPhone !!

the best you can do is to shoot with the widest angle, in your case 18mm, set the f stop to the lowest number, set your ISO to the highest number and adjust your shutter speed to a correct exposure. If the shutter speed is above 250th of a sec, you might get a decent shot while moving but if it isn't you will have to pan with the subject or shoot head on as you approach or leave the subject. If the shutter speed is higher than 500th of a second you can adjust your ISO down until your SS is somewhere around the 250-500th mark. This is the best you can expect unless you are stopped and on a tripod.

Perhaps get yourself an I pad or I phone, there is a method behind that particular maddness, mine hasn't failed me yet, rain or snow daylight or darkness. Good quality pictures at about 1/5th the cost and aggrivation. Granted usually not as good as my Nikon D5100 but still darn good shots.

In a moving vehicle you should not use a monopod or tripod as the vehicle will impart vibration through the pod to the camera. Hand hold and pan to capture any moving object.
