Occasionally, I read on this forum where certain individuals speak of backing up their photos. Some use the cloud, some external drives, and various other methods. And there are those who will burn a DVD. For the life of me, I cannot see how this is helpful in safeguarding your photos. I have tried it and lost everything.
So now we have a humour section, wow.
It's those metal tongs that gave you the problem. The magnetic material in the disc probably reacted to the steel in the tongs causing the loss problem. Next time try asbestos covers for the tongs. I think that coupled with a good electronic smoke reader (you can probably find a good used one on ebay for a reasonable cost). Good luck with the data recovery. ;-)
Just remember that no storage media stays around forever. Eventually you won't be able to find a reader to retrieve it. Remember Reel to Reel mag tapes? Also 8-track, cassettes, floppy discs big and small. I expect optical drives will start disappearing in a few years
You could put hard drives, flash drives, sd cards in those tongs and it would be just as appropriate.
Within 3-5 years data should be transferred to new storage or you are playing with fire.
