The echidna is a primitive mammal found in Australia and New Guinea. 30 to 45 cms long weighing 2 to7 kg. It is a monotreme [ mammal that lays eggs
Platypus is also a monotreme] They can be anything between honey colour, dark redish brown or black. A very sensitive nose to find food and a long sticky tongue to catch ants, worms, and insects . Female lays an egg
in her pouch. in 10 days a puggle [baby echidna ] is born blind and hairless.
it takes about 4 weeks before the puggle develops sharp spines and leaves the pouch. The spines can be 50 mm long and are modified hair. they have fur between spines. They are solitary animals that burrow. if threatened they
roll into a ball and spines protect them. They are on our Aussie 5 cent coin.
This one wandered through our yard.
