Yes Pounder35, what a sad turn of events ... the nurse who answered the prank call from Australia has now apparently committed suicide:

Right on. I think it is sad that so many people feel free to bad-mouth others. (OK, OK, I know people will say it's called "freedon of speech)
My father had an old-fashioned saying: "If you can't say anything good about somebody, don't say anything at all". It may be trite, but it's a really good way to live one's life.

Just imagine - if we didn't have our constitutional monarchy but had a presidential system we might have had President Thatcher !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God forbid. There is to be a party in my pub on the night she croaks. Come along.

One should assume, then, that you are not a Tory. Pity.

You are absolutely right. I am not a Tory. In fact my hand would probably wither from my arm if I attempted to cast my vote for a Tory.

You see I live in one of the parts of the UK that suffered extremely badly from the last series of Tory governments we had. In what way? Well in this region we experienced having our basic industries (ship-building, coal mining and steel manufacture) closed down during those 18 disastrous years.

Thatcher believed we could survive as a nation by selling banking, investment and insurance services to ourselves. Even the present-day Tories recognise how bloody stupid that was. You guys in the US should see something familiar in that set-up. Wasn't it your banking/financial services people who caused the present economic situation e.g. with their "sub-prime" mortgages ?

This does not mean that I am a raging socialist by the way.

Congrats for the parents.
I remember how estactic I was when I learned I was going to be a daddy and a grand daddy.
Good luck to the expecting parents

Not to become argumentative over this UK issue, but :-), if those googled 33% are fed up with royal news perhaps they should stop reading and watching it, there is plenty of other news to watch or read about. 8-)

Don't know if that was what Bmac meant. Was he saying 33% of the population or 33% of those who are unemployed, etc., etc. ? 33% of the population would mean about 20,000,000 but 33% of the unemployed would be less than 2,000,000 - if my maths is right.

Someone will accuse me of name-dropping ( I AM NOT in that sense ) but until you have met her ( as I have, twice, and The Prince of Wales also twice) you cannot know enough to make a proper judgement. I think that they are both very good value. So must the many Americans who come here to soak up something of our history, pageantry, etc.

We're going far afield from the topics in this thread, but actually it was not the banking and financial services people who caused the sub-prime mortgage mess. I've posted at length on other threads on this forum in that regard, but the primary cause of the sub-prime mess was the Community Reinvestment Act passed under Jimmy Carter along with subsequent re-authorizations of that act.

These laws made it illegal to deny a mortgage even though the neighborhood was in decline and would likely lose value. They also made it illegal to deny a mortgage even though the mortgager could not demonstrate his ability to repay the note.
