Looking for a first time buyer a quality camera, any ideas???

:XD: I am interested in purchasing a relatively good camera for the first time-- used to photograph in High School and was quite good at it-- this will be the first investment I have been interested in--- any ideas? I see by your adverts there is a lot of good equipment out there for sale----

I sent a classified advert to let people know I was interested in purchasing a used camera and perhaps a tripod-- I livein the high desert and get some amazing sunrises and sunsets-- can anyone help????

A question that can't be answered as not only is there no idea of what you cant afford but no idea of what you wantto use it for.

There are a lot of good used cameras and equipment on e-bay.

I started off with a Minolta 5D primarily because I had Minolta lenses for my film cameras. I now use a Sony A55 with my Minolta lenses since Sony bought Minolta's camera division. I still use the 5D. Although it is only 6.1 mega pixels, I can produce large, quality images with it.
Lenses are what you should consider first, body second.
People are upgrading all the time.

I'd suggest the Canon T4i to get you started.
You begin shooting in fully automatic until you get comfortable with the camera, then move out to the various creative semi-automatic modes, then move on to the semi manual modes, and eventually to the fully manual mode. That's what I did with a T2i (older model) until I wore it out and moved to the Canon 7D.

Be careful. Many responders will suggest a particular camera ONLY because it's a brand they have, such as a Canon XX or Nikon XX (about 98.98% will be either Canons or Nikons). I think you should look at other brands as well, broaden your options; there are some fantastic cameras out there BESIDES Canons and Nikons!!

Mate, I've got a Panasonic G3 Micro 4/3 with the kit lens and a panasonic 45-200 zoom. camera is in excellent shape, kit lens has never been used, the 45-200 is new. Will sell for $350.00 if interested contact me at sr71blackbird@att.net or 707 206 8955....

Go to a camera store and look around and see for yourself whats available. Ask a lot of questions but do some investigating and make up your own mind dont let a camera salesman "sell" you something. Asking opinions here is a trap because everybody will tell you that what they have is the best.

I agree with Kuhlski post.

The only reason I went with the digital Minolta was because of my good lenses and in buying so I got more lenses since I bought them, the 7D and 5D on e-bay for great prices.
I am starting a virtual media business, shooting virtual tours.
If the business takes off like I know it will, and start making serious income, I may have to purchase a different system which I am slowly researching. HDR very photography is important to me and there is not much external trigger support for Sony cameras. I have to manually shoot everything.
In the mean time I will use what I have got to make it to the next level of camera of equipment.
Research! Let us know.

I have to agree with Jaydog... take your time and investigate. I have a nikon D300, yes a couple of years old but I couldn't be happier. I love it. :)

#2 do you want a DSLR with a couple lens
there are many good used DSLR cameras & lens for sale in local camera stores & at on line stores such as Andronica & B&H - $400 & up for cameras + $$ for lens
#3 will a bridge camera without the need for the extra lens work for you
some excellent Panasonic Lumis FX35 , FZ 50, FZ150 for from $150 - $250 that will do all you could expect to get and more from any beginner DSLR camera
#4 New Bridge camera by Canon, Nikon & Panasonic are excellent buys at around $400
Combine any of the above cameras with Elements 10 and you will be a happy photographer.
