hey all you old gossips[ok,guilty also],, instead of telling all the
newbies to our site,howto/what to,do--how about,,#1 answer the EXACT question they asked, then refer them to all those
glorious[and not so] utube sites that will give them greater insight than we can in a few words..I'm sure its been mentioned before, but this am was the first time I saw ref to utube..[I'm new here too]
#2 I guess after answering question the next thing to tell them[as we have been doing..test-test, play-check, "do it again sam" LOL..OH can't forget--post- post- post,,so us
"more mature" "amatuers" can comment, tell stories, change the subject,,tease the [I'm nice] HECK out of each other, and all others.. ---joe [I sure hope this ramble made some sense
somehow.]
Sorry, your ramble doesn't make sense , at not too me.
What are you trying to say?

I'm lost... but that isn't unusual.
morning photocat,,I have noticed that when we have someone
[newbie especially] asks a question,,we have a tendency to start telling what we own or do, about that subject, instead of answering his/her question..then we ramble off /tease each other and push to much extranious, extra
info, at them..as some say, they get fouled up trying to read "tech" manuals[having expereince at that I can understand]..I recently found all the videos on utube, that "show and tell" about cameras and how to operate them.. others give "rules" of all things about photography..
yes,we can comment/critique-and teach of experience by words. show[even by video]and tell works for people more often than just words..[a teacher uses words--an instructor
shows how]....--have I made sense this time???lordy hope so..I know I "beat around the bush".. --joe

I for one, teach/instruct the way I learned. I don't use Youtube for instruction videos so why would I tell someone else to do that? I don't have any reference for it and can not answer any questions that might arise from a link I post if I myself haven't used it.
Does that make sense? If someone asks a question about how to do something, I'm going to tell them how I do it. If you use youtube to learn, then when (and if) you answer you of course will post the youtube link YOU found to be useful. It's up to the OP to take the reins and learn the way they are comfortable learning.

morning mother,, as my ramble above indicated--I'm an instructor--..I want to answer questions, and "show-n-tell more.
the only way to "show"is to refer them to utube..to answer there questions[specifially] is easy,,to advance their knowledge
I have to use the "tools"[utube] available.
we[guilty also] as a group, end up rambling of subject[and tease back/forth]about own favorite[camera/proram/method]of other things distantly related to original question..
I love the, comraderie, friendship, etc. of the group--but we are also teachers/learners who wish to grow in knowledge..
I also know[peeking/thinking] that you monitor the site closely
maybe you can [if you understand] translate my ramble to make sense to all the others..
I am NOT trying to put anyone down..I enjoy the site too much and can try to help others..

how did you learn????

I learned by picking up my manual and going one page at a time learning about my camera. I still reference my manual (acutally I had to order a new copy of it as I wore out my original).
After that I have purchased numerous books on photography and taught myself how to move from auto to manual (thank you "Understanding Exposure").
Then I moved over to photography forums where I asked questions and lovely much more talented people took the time out of their day to answer my questions. Not once was I directed to a youtube video. Everything I have learned I have learned by reading and doing.
Now after a year of being self-taught, I have a mentor who looks at my images and tells me what I am doing wrong and how to improve, once again he does not direct me to youtube videos or other links, he tells me what is wrong and then I need to fix it myself. He's really teaching me how to "see" the whole image correcty.

mother,,I never meant to sound like I was trying to put down your way of doing things[read/play with dial/Av/Tv/M/scene/auto]..but some ppls can't grasp meaning of [new/tech] things as well as others..
by your own statement,,you had an instuctor,,he had your "show" and he could Tell you what could have improved
your "show"..
also [some] there are utube sites that "compare" cameras
that can answer questions that our newbie[or up grader] didn't
[or know to] ask about.. so we[me too] tout our favorite and forget to answer his/hers EXACT question.. lord help me make sense..... LOL joe

show quote)
Sorry you mis-understood, my mentor doesn't show me how to do anything, he tells me what is wrong with my images. He doesn't show me how to do it, in order for him to take me on an mentor me, I had to have a really firm grasp of how to use my camera and what to do in certain situations. He doesn't take the time to teach, just tell me "this isn't your best and here is why"
Examples of what he says (really from my last email from him)
Quote:
Your W/B is off.
What is the focal point of this?
Great catchlights.
Have you moved to off camera flash YET?
Not really instruction, it's up to me to know how to fix the issues, not up to him to teach me.

If so, God help the students...
I still don't understand what was said in the first post of the thread nor any further posts since then.
The demand of "listen up" in the title set me on edge as being aggressive to begin with.
I think this guy needs a therapist, not an "instructor". I'm going to go get a hammer and whack myself in the head a couple of times, maybe then I'll understand what he is talking about? Or at least it will feel better when I stop...
My take on what happens. Some one asks a Question and instead of answearing it the whole thing goes on tangants. For example the question was asked about how to take pictures at a Wedding when the Minester woujld not allow flash. First there was a discussion on him doing a wedding. He didn't ask that. Then there was a BIG discussion on using flash during the ceremoney. A lot of that went to how fair it was to ask for pictures without a flash. He didn't ask that. While I enjoy the debates I think it would be much better to stick to the subject. In this case how to take wedding pics without a flash. Like others I didn' get the question here. - Dave
