My stepson and I built a pond in our garden and shortly after all sorts of wildlife settled there. Conservation, like charity, can begin at home.

We lived near the A1(M), which is supposed to be good for wildlife along its verges. It was a good few years ago now and the pond may no longer exist. The downside of the motorway going past our house on the outskirts of Durham was that 1 or 2 of Matthew's hamsters escaped into the garden and we had a regular visitor in the shape of a kestrel forever hovering above those verges and our garden. Doubt if the hamsters got very far.

I know, but it was before I really got into photography. What I do want to do is visit a National Trust site nearby (Gibside) which is the place up here where they have a successful red kite programme. These birds are fantastic and are quite happy to come close up. I'll get out there before long.
