Hi Sefferdog,
Nice picture of the moon.
I tried to take a picture, but the results are not good since I am only using a Tamron 18-270 mm zoom. How long a focal length will I need? What lens and extenders do I have to use?
You should be able to get a nice shot with what you have. I am using a 70-300. Go to manual settings, shutter speed of 250, 100 ISO, F8. Turn off auto focus and manually focus. On mine I turn on live view and then the 10X magnification in the viewing screen to focus. I also use a wireless shutter release, but you could just do a timed shutter release within the camera itself. Give it a go and post what you get, you should be fine! Thanks for looking.

I forgot to mention that I used the 18 - 270 zoom on a Nikon D80 with the APS-C sensor. Will the max. focal length no be equivalent to 1.5 x 270mm = 405 mm? The resulting image doesn't by far fill the frame.
I am using a Canon 60D with a crop sensor as well. It won't come close to filling the frame. You need to crop it in an image editor after you shoot it. Your equipment will take a nice pic of the moon.
Thanks for the info.
I am in So. California right at the coast, right now it is drizzling. No chance to see the moon and stars.

I made a mistake in the settings I told you also. The ISO I use is 200, NOT 100.
