My wife took a photography class at school and one winter's day just driving by saw this tree and just took a shot out the car window. She really enjoys using black & white and would appreciate any comments to help her improve her pictures.
She used a 35 mm Olympus IS-, not the newest but great camera

You have levelled the photo but not cropped out the scanned area
Remind her to avoid GREY snow you need +1.5 stops, eg if it meters at f5.6 at 1/125th give it 1/125 at f3.5
The second photo does look better, practice-practice..
The mood and composition are attractive.

Setting the white balance would make a lot more sense.From gray to washed out is not a good trade.
Thank you for your constructive criticism its well taken and made note of.
She still has a lot to learn as photography had never been her number one priority until she had some health problems and had to make changes, but she loves doing it
