Can anyone help me with the pros and cons of softbox vs umbrella reflectors for indoor photography or is one superior to the other? I am just looking to do small indoor shoots, portriat and pin-up type photos with limited ceiling hieght and limited floor space. Any advice, insight and or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert G
Robert, I don't think one is superior to the other but they are different. Umbrellas and Softboxes modify the light coming from a light source and mostly they, "soften" the light. Umbrellas are certainly cheaper and that may be a deciding factor. Softboxes on the other hand give you greater control with light falloff and scatter.
Here's a short video that might be helpful.

Hello Frank, First I would like to thankyou for your quick responce to my post. The link that you shared with me was VERY informative, I guess I could say it was very enlightening, and I cant thankyou enough.
Respectfully,

My best guess would be given the smaller space to work in, soft boxes would be most helpful, reflective umbrellas would be second choice, shoot-thru umbrellas third. Hard to say, as choices can vary depending on style, subject, number of lights used, etc. Like it was explained to me, practice using all of the options will be the best teacher. Good luck.
We use both, but when travelling take a Brolly, more compact as we leave our Softbox assembled permannetly.Really it's a case of six of one and half a dozen of other...Cheers
Check out ebay for umbrella reflecting (or umbrella) soft boxes. I bought two of them and am crazy about the light they give off.
That link was really good. Informitive and to the point.
