I have a Nikon D300S camera and I want to purchase a Macro lens for the camera. What is the best lens to buy for close up pictures of flowers or insects? I have been looking at the Sigma 105mm 1:2.8 DG Macro HSM, is this a good one to buy?

I don't think you can do better than nikon's 105 micro vr f2.8. I have one and are very satisfied with it.

Look at the Tokina f2.8. Check this out on Ken Rockwell's website. You will be amazed at what he has to say about this lens. I have one and love it!

This lens does have an extremely good write up. It will fit a D300's but I beleive it may be an FX lens? Someone correct me if I am wrong...

The Nikon 105mm Micro f2.8 is one of the best but again this an FX format lens and if you could afford it, it would be my choice...

Both will give you 1:1 at their minimum focus range.

Just bear in mind that an FX lens will have it's crop ratio increased by a factor of 1.5 so in effect it will become a 158mm lens on your D300's...
