Articulating LCD display or not?

I'm coming in at the low end of things and am torn between the Canon T2i vs. T3i. So far as I can tell, the only issue is the articulating monitor. Does anyone have an opinion about whether the extra cost is worth it?

If you have the need to hold the camera up above your head and shoot down I can see the benefit of the articulating screen. Such as shooting over a fence for a softball game, or down into the middle of a group of kids at a birthday party to get a shot of the cake. We looked at the T3i while camera shopping, and we ended up getting the T2i instead. The swivel on the articulating screen looked to be a potential weak spot. IMO the least amount of moving parts the better. They are both awesome cameras and we are very pleased with the T2i!

I have a Nikon D5000 and I love the articulating screen! I use it mostly for when I'm down on the ground or really low with my tripod. I have used it when shooting up high but not as much. I like it as a viewfinder cover also. If I had a choice of having it or not i would want it.

Took my Canon S5IS to the Macy's Day Parade a couple of years ago. Invaluable. Also nice working from kayak when I need a bit more altitude in my shot. Have had no problem with the articulating screen. Love it.

As far as I know, the best camera Canon makes with an articulated display is the 60D. I really regret that they have decided not to equip their best cameras with this feature. The articulated lens is great for including the photographer in the pictures he shoots and for pictures taken at from an interesting overhead perspective. I may buy the camera just for that feature.

I have T3i and love articulating screen - I use it when low to ground or at a weird angle shooting macro. I think for 100$ it is very worth it - it saves some backache ! Depends on what you will be shooting.

I see you evidently take pictures of cars. I take pictures of a lot of car shows and i get shots with my Canon t3i I wouldn't be able to get without it. I love the articulating screen as I can get overhead shots and very low shots without breaking my old body. You can also get interior shots without climbing in the cars. It comes in handy in many other situations too such as parades.

I couldn't agree more. Any articulating part on any mechanical device is a potential weak spot. As for me I am a firm believer in the simpler the better. These cameras today are loaded with stuff that hardly anyone ever uses. As you said it could be useful for a few things but how often would one use it?

As was mentioned, getting down for MACRO shots or just where you would have to kneel down.
Older knees like the articulating LCD.
I have it on my Fuji but not on my Pentax.
I wish my Pentax had it since I like flower and insect shots.

I have a Canon SX30 IS with the articulating screen. I find it very use full and would look for that feature on any new camera I purchased.

My first PRE-DSLR camera had the articulating screen. I LOVED IT ♥ ! When I stepped up to the 40D it did not have it, and I felt it was a big step down. If you ever have to crawl around on your belly in the mud to look up through the view finder at a flower or something, you will quickly learn to enjoy an articulating screen. Canon came out with the 60D with one. But they cheapened a lot of other things down with the camera, a plastic body instead of Magnesium, and lower Fast FPS, to name a few. You will have to decide how much it would mean for you and the type of shooting you want to do. If Canon puts it on a new camera without cutting out other features, I will buy it.

Are you including the T3i in your Canon assessment?

The screen makes a huge difference in Macro shooting. Sometimes I get my camera in angles and tight spots I could never see the flat screen let alone the viewfinder. You can adjust the camera settings while looking at the subject and some times chasing the little critters around. I have been at outdoor concerts only 20-30 feet from the stage and got shots that would not happen otherwise. By holding the camera way above my head and looking at the screen I could pan zoom and shoot whatever I wanted. As far as things going wrong with the screen I would not worry. I had a Canon SX10 with that screen and abused it badly for several years and it only had a small scratch in the plastic screen. My T3i has a much larger and scratch resistant screen, Way better!

Thanks. I have a Canon SX10 now and the articulating screen is one of my favorite features. As I'm moving to DSLR, I am getting all kinds of conflicting recommendations. I suppose that is to be expected.
