First Shots with my Canon SX 50

Ok so my new sx 50 arrived about 5:00 yesterday and I was still trying to put the camera straps on when my wife got home and said "you should see the moon tonight"...
So I put my new toy on a $19. tripod...set it to auto...and went out and tried it...
Not perfect shots but I had NO idea what I was doing...I think this little guy has potential.
No PP...can anyone tell me why the bottom of the moon has that red ring to it...?

Don't see a red ring either, although the lower portion of the moon is somewhat brighter due to ambient knight I expect.
