I never enter photo contests. I just don't take the time to do that. I did enter one years ago in the 90's and won 3rd place with my entry. A few days ago I noticed in the Idaho Falls Magazine there is a photo contest going on that is going to end entries submitted in a few days. I mentioned it to my photography mentor and he suggested I enter these two buffalo photos.

What do you think? I really like them and think they have a chance in the Wildlife section. Both photos were taken at Yellowstone National Park.

I'd send the first.

And you know it depends on the judges.........

I can never figure out judges logic or reasoning.
I don't do contests.

Thanks very much for your thoughts. Yup, everything could ride on what the judges had for breakfast or other reasons. But they do look good to me. Can't hurt.

I do not do contests either. But I do a lot of judging, my own photos. My average keepers is two or three out of a hundred shots. I find so much wrong with the photo that I missed when I was taking it, sometimes it's frustrating.
So critically looking at your first photo, the only thing I can see is the animal should do something with its beard, clean it up but it is good for the photo. If it was my photo it would be on my wall. Perfection Personified.
BTW that's a bison, not a buffalo

They are nicely done. However, what makes them unique (one thing judges should look for)? Enter them, but don't hold your breath.

My photography mentor and BFF who does the printing and some PP for me says he likes the first one better too. Apparently you made a great choice. Of course huh?

True judges are the wildcard anytime they are involved. In our last club competition almost everyone scored middle to low and the judge said he really liked one of the lowest scores (Say What?!??).

I like the first image best. The subject is more clearly separated from the background. Also I can see more detail in has face and the separation between summer and winter coats.

Both are excellent bison shots.

Thanks very much Bill. You are among the majority, I think everyone so far, who likes the first photo. My friend says he likes it because it looks more lifelike, not necessarily 3D but in that category. If I can only enter one photo that will be it.
