Two Repair Fails

You'll never succeed if you don't try.

I tried to replace the LCD in an old Sony camcorder, but a replacement screen is not available. I think I'll remove the hard drive and see how the last video turned out. it will cost me about $25 for an adapter, though, so it's probably not worth the trouble. Hard drives are supposed to be so sensitive to movement, yet thousands of camcorders - and iPods - have been using them for years.

I also tried to repair a cheap cordless impact wrench. I bought it from Amazon, but it would not run in reverse. They gave me a refund and told me to keep it. I took it apart and tried to find out why it wouldn't spin in reverse. It seemed that the little plastic cooling fins would jam on the motor occasionally. The fins were much too close to the motor. Using a Dremel, I ground them down. It worked fine until I put the case back together. then it was go/no-go. Loosening a screw here or there would get it spinning for a while.

Last night, I gave it another try and made sure everything was seated correctly. It seemed to work fine in both directions - until it refused to turn at all. I've spent enough time on this poorly designed tool, so I'll see if there are any parts I can salvage. Maybe I'll unwind the copper from the motor and save it to turn into cash at some point. This is a very nice tool, and if they had taken just a bit more time designing it, it would work fine. I'm guessing that the case and the mechanism are conflicting.

On second thought, I'm going to hold onto it and see if I can modify the inside of the case to avoid interference. If they allowed 2mm more room inside the case, I bet it would work fine. The three wires running over the trigger are flattened from the pressure of the casing.

Selling the copper winding might be a good idea at this time. Copper is up over a dollar a pound from previous years.

I'll have to wait till I get enough copper to offset the price of gas driving there.

I ordered some high-powered lasers from a questionable source, so I'll see how that works out.

The impact wrench came in a nice case, and it included half a dozen sockets. I can also do something with the battery and charger.
