With all the headlines about cannibals in Papua, New Guinea, I actually have some photos of NON-cannibals from 1943-44 that were in my Dad's Navy scrapbook from when he was stationed there at Port Moresby in WWII.

Considering the conditions there, heat & rain almost every day, humidity, these photos have survived well. Most of them were about 3" x 4", some smaller.

The last photo is a "Black Cat" - PBY Catalinas, probably something like what Joe's Uncle went down in. They used them for recon all along the coasts there.

Kim, what's the adornment on the male's private parts? Any idea?

Yes, they are gourds but why they are there I have no idea. My Dad didn't know either.

Great pictures. The facial adornment is most intriguing.

It's called a "koteka" and was was considered by some tribes the only proper form of dress. It was also used for tribal identification since each tribe had distinctive shapes and colors.

Very cool photos, I'm glad these made it. In the one photo it's interesting to see the clash of western dress vs. tribal dress. Probably one of the last few places that even to this day has not been overly explored or exploited by colonization or western culture.
