I watched a YouTube unboxing and demo of a Miniot Wheel 2 Turntable, handmade in Norway (I think). The unusual thing about this is the fact that the stylus is under the turntable, so you play the record upside down. It's a beautiful, simple turntable, and I suspected it would be expensive. The reviewer said it cost £450. To me, that's expensive, especially since I already have a couple of turntables.

Well, I was wrong. Maybe that £450 was just for the stylus because the turntable itself costs between $2,000 - $4,000.

£450 isn't expensive for a turntable nowaday. the $2000-$4000 is about right for such a unit. I know you wouldn't buy it but there are enough people who would buy it.

Wow! I bought an AR turntable in the late 1960, and that considered very good at the time (Acoustic Research). I placed the order for the whole setup with a store in Manhattan. I drove down, parked outside the store, and loaded everything into the car for the ride home. Everything still works.

Sure and those old ones are better than many of the new ones that are selling for several hundreds of dollars. I don't like vinyl but I do have a turntable.

Not for somebody who values their records.

I agree I don't like that. It was designed for the novelty look and not for better playing of the records.

I'd be suspicious of (very expensive) gimmickry. There were tables in the '70's that didn't rely on gravity but they never won out over traditional tables & tone arms because of inconsistent tracking. I had a Thorens table with the Shure SME high track arm and a Stanton 681EE cartridge that perfectly tracked deep in the center of the groove and kept a constant 3 gram pressure. Its sound still beats any digital format. I suppose the Miniot might appeal to a rich Millennial who wants to impress his/her friends but who doesn't know any better.

I have a Technics SL220 turntable that I've had for probably 30 to 40 years and it still works well. I do not use it very often but it still works for my needs. I have no idea what I paid for it but it was certainly equivalent to the prices of the ones referenced here.

That’s a good point. My turntable, tone arm and cartridge cost around $400 back in 1973 when I bought them. I guess that’s about $4,500 in today’s dollars. Funny; back then I was living on peanut butter, salad and eggs, having very little income, but I had the best damn sound money could buy. You know, priorities!

Nice setup - the tracking force seems a bit high - do you find that necessary?

Very simple and excellent turntable. AR (Acoustic Research) became well known for popularizing the acoustic suspension (closed box) bookshelf loudspeaker, particularly the classic AR-3(A). It was direct competition for the well respected JBL L100 Studio Monitor,

To the best of my questionable memory that was what the specs called for. I sold my vinyl setup for a pittance a few years ago when my hearing started getting lousy. I now rely on cd’s and YouTube Music. Not as good sound but at least I can pull up just about every concert and song I ever liked.
