We decided to have lunch at Caffé Florian, which opened December 29, 1720. Its first name was “Alla Venezia Trionfante”, or “Triumphant Venice”, but in a short few months, Venetians began calling it “Florian’s” after the name of the Caffè’s founder, Floriano Francesconi. This magnificent location, after more than 300 years’ history, is still the place where Venice and the world meet. We had a leisurely and relaxing lunch with a glass of Prosecco and enjoyed the music from the Caffé. When we got our bill, there was a charge of 8 Euros each for the music; it was worth it. Note that I took the last two photos on our 1973 visit.

We spent 3 days in Venice on our previous visit 49 years before this visit. Yes, it’s touristy and crowded, but It is an amazing place and one of the places everyone should visit at least once. We went back for 3 more nights in 2023 and will probably go back again.

I took the last two photos on our visit in 1973.

My previous post can be found at https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-804674-1.html, while the first post of this series (that includes a map of all of the places where we stopped) can be found at https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-801137-1.html

I feel dumb. Never realized Venice was an island.

Thanks for your comment and coming along on our journey NMGal. There is always something new to learn. There are other islands in the Venetian lagoon, the most visited being Murano, Burano and Torcello. There are other smaller islands, such as the one that our hotel us on. We visited Murano, the most famous and visited one in 1973; it is well know for its glassmaking. We only had the one full day on this visit and didn't make it to any of the other islands. However, we went to Burano on our visit last year and had a wonderful time. I will post photos from that trip when I finish this series. Burano is best known for its lace work and colorful buildings. Burano is farther away from Venice than Murano, but still an easy vaporetto (water bus) ride, usually with a stop at Murano.

Thanks Mike! We've done lots of wandering and there will be more wandering around Venice in my next post. Venice is a great city to walk in, and the vaporettos run all of the time and give you nice views from the water.

Thanks Mark, I'm glad it brought back good memories. We seriously considered going back again this year, but there are so many places we haven't been to yet that we decided to skip it this time.

Another great series, Dennis. Until just a few days ago, I too did not realize Venice was an island, or series of islands. The information you provide along with great sets of pictures both entertain and educate. Well done.
Tom
