I just purchased a Nikon D500 camera from KEH camera that looks like new. A friend recommended this camera and KEH. I want to get a back up battery. Any recommendations for off brand batteries, other than Nikon or should I stay with the Nikon battery?? Thank you.

I always go with the brand names for everything. "Peace of mind" being the reason why. You could always buy one of each and compare.

As of today, it still works like a charm (as well as a Nikon battery).

I have a Nikon 3400 and have used both Nikon and off brand batteries. In my experience, Nikon batteries perform better and last longer. Off brand work fine for a while with less use time per charge, but when they start to go, they tend to swell and get stuck in the battery compartment.

I would recommend staying with a Nikon battery.
Yes, there are cheaper Knock offs but if your camera burns up, you saved nothing.

I have never had a problem with any of my Wasabi batteries.

The D500, when launched had a problem with older EN-EL15 batteries.
There should be a 2 somewhere, perhaps Li2?
To ensure you have a good one for the D500.

And I have always used aftermarket... Voltage is the same... size is the same... a big cost difference. Last as long? Probably, made in the same China factory. Chief EW ...Elitists will waste your money.

PS: the new chargers with LED fullness indicators are great.... packages of 2 batteries and a charger are good deals.

There are many battery factories in China. How do you know which one makes which. Granted so far all the Li-ion batteries for cameras I have seen were made in China but how do you know if 2 bateries came from the same factory?

In fact it's likely the OEM and the third party batteries are not made in the same factory simply because when Canon or Nikon contract a factory to make their batteries they probably have an agreement that the factory not making the same battery for third party.

The problem is going to be finding alternate batteries in the future.
The D500 is 8 years old, my T1i is 14 years old.
The older cameras all work just fine, but people keep "upgrading", which over time reduces the customer base for the older camera batteries. Luckily some batteries are still in demand, while others are falling by the wayside.
At some point, those with older, perfectly working cameras, will be forced to get a current model camera because good, well made batteries are (will be) no longer available. I don't think I would buy from Bingo Batteries....
Glad my Sony H-1 takes AAs, it's only 18 years old.
(Time flies when you're having fun.)

Isn't technology attrition great?
