I brought my laptop to the senior meeting today to run a slideshow - with music - of a picnic we had over the summer. Although I used the keyboard volume buttons to set the volume high, there was no sound. I had sound at home but not at the meeting. Then I looked in the bottom, right corner of the screen. There was a little sound icon, and it was set to minimum. Why would there be two separate, conflicting controls for volume? My desktop controls work together. I can adjust the sound by moving either control.
Maybe the laptop control on the screen sets the maximum volume, with the buttons on the keyboard doing finer adjustment. Odd.
One for system volume, one for application volume.
One control for volume, one to "mute" the system?
If I fat finger my TV remote I need a magnifying glass to find the mute button to restore sound.

Either one will cut the sound if I move the control all the way.

Think of it as master (system-all applications) and slave (one individual application) controls.
