I find the auto focus on my camera unable to meet my needs to quickly focus on fast moving subjects and some candids. I would love to change my focusing screen to a split image screen and be able to do it manually instead. Is it possible to do that ? I use two Nikon D 7000 and a D 800

Personally, I prefer 45-degree split screens over horizontal split screens (which are difficult to use on a horizontal line).

If I had the option, that's how I would have gone too.

I've heard (maybe incorrectly) that these screens affect the light readings.

I have used them in 35mm as well as medium format bodies and never saw any changes in metering. No idea why they would have any non-compensable effect in a digital.

Thanks. I have D5000, kit lens & 18-200. I need all the help I can get. I have a hard time focussing. I'm analog trying to become digital. I'll have to get a light meter also, (for my older primes)

The D5000 has a notoriously bad viewfinder, not sure if there is a replaceable screen available for it but it would sure benefit from one if there were. Also, I think that body uses a pentamirror design rather than a pentaprism design viewfinder, but I am not totally positive about that.

This is what Katz-Eye said re the D800 a few minutes ago:

"Unfortunately, we are not able to support the Nikon D800/D800E at this time. This is certainly a model we would like to support, but after our initial examination, we found that current technical limitations prevent us from making screens for these cameras and it is unknown if we will support them in the future or not.
Work is ongoing, but no short term solution is apparent. I will add your name to the interest list for the Nikon D800 and you will receive updates if/when more information becomes available. I am sorry we cannot meet your current need, but if I can be of any other service, please feel free to ask."

Do you have a screen from a different maker?

Sorry I didn't say at first but I have a D5000 with the original screen. The old eyes are not what they used to be & I miss the split screen.

Are you needing a screen for your D800? I find mine quite bright and clear and have had no desire to change the factory screen as of yet. The electronic focus confirm feature is priceless on it! I use that with my old Nikon 500mm F4 P manual focus lens and have never even been close to out-of-focus with it. (My only manual focus lens anymore.)

Good to hear!
Haven't used many of my old lenses with it yet....looking at options, just in case.
Thanks!

Does the Katz Eye Screen black out after F/22? This is from the Katz Eye site

Level 1: Little or no attention required to eye position
Level 2: Minimal attention required
Level 3: Moderate attention required
Level 4: Careful attention required
Level 5: Both halves of the prism cannot be seen simultaneously with usable brightness regardless of eye position

Note that even a ‘level 4’ rating means that visibility of both halves of the prism can be attained. Here are the results of testing with a Canon 20D and an EF 50mm f1.4 lens:

Level 1: Down to f/4.5
Level 2: Down to f/9.0
Level 3: Down to f/14
Level 4: Down to f/22, the smallest aperture at which testing could be completed with this lens
Level 5: Did not occur for any aperture which could be tested for this lens
