Are these just tree holes?

Tree holes have always fascinated me and stirred my imagination! Some are pretty amazing formations, and my mind frequently wonders if I am seeing a tree hole or if I am actually looking at the entrance to someone's home. If you've looked at some of my recent posts, you know the answer. However, it continues to thrill me when I walk past a particular tree hole, and see someone peeking out or, better yet, scooting into it.

So, over the year, I have captured a few tree holes in my stomping grounds and will share.

As always, I hope you enjoy!

Some look like they may be hollowed out by critters and used as dens or nest!!!

Good eye BAchme... but if you get real close to the tree holes, do you ever smell cookies?

Nice shots; interesting holes. The first one reminds me in a way of that ugly painting "The Scream" that so many people think is fantastic. I much prefer your hole in the tree.

Some of those could be former lightning strikes.

OK, having been with this forum for a bit, I know the members have a great sense of humor. Given that, I tried to investigate with no luck. Been pretty close to a few lately, so I'll ask what does that mean?

Wow, that's interesting. I didn't know that, talk about power! I know the weather took a squirrel's tree down a while back.

Some of those are gaps where two limbs or trunks didn't completely blend. Others are where a limb/twig broke off and rot etc. created a hole while the tree continued to grow. If a squirrel etc. takes up residency, they wear off the tender new wood fibers that grow into the gap and thus enlarge and make it permanent.

The Keebler elves reportedly hang out in hollow trees where they bake cookies, wafers and enter by such holes... That is, that's what advertisers say... Maybe a whiff of chocolate ? Small, tiny voices within?

My mum told me the holes are where the fairies live.

Glad you liked them. At least they weren't squirrels. Sadly, my next post is a follow-up, and there may be some squirrels in those holes!
