Thank you jimvanells, Alvin, 47greyfox, rcarol, Larry, Mike, MtManMD, mvetrano2, Joe, junglejim1949, Bruce, Earnest, Jeff! There's always the reality of losing a bit of image quality with an extender. I've come to the position of skipping the extender if I can, either because I don't need it or I have a native lens focal length for the distance. But otherwise, I'll take the longer effective focal length over not having enough pixels from cropping.

There is a point where AF speed, lower ISO and AI pixel enlargement can make for better "IQ" than using an extender - based on individual personal tastes.

I've never seen an invented pixel that looks better than an original from the camera. ISO performance is nearly as 'in the past' as mirror-based photography. Engaging your camera's 'continuous AF' feature does overcome any sluggish AF performance from a stop-start. Urban legends of extenders are easily dispelled by the facts of the situation, somewhat the purpose of these periodic results presentations.
