I'm looking for program or phone app or program to show photos to a client for their review and selection without actually sending them the full res images. Is there an easy way to do this? Perhaps Smugmug or maybe out of Lr? Perhaps something they can click or swipe without having to type or list out the photo numbers for me.

For showing, reduce them and put them on a file sharing site like One Drive or Drop Box.
Send them a link to view the files.

Not sure about them being able to tag the images "selected".

I normally use DropBox to just send final edited jpgs but in this case they have asked too see all the photos including ones I didn't select for editing which are like 800 shots. I'd rather not release any unedited shots (NEF or otherwise) unless I understand what they want with them. I sent them a pdf contact sheet just assuming they want to see if I missed any good shots in the raws but they are admittedly hard to see with 20 per page.

Ahhh... I wasn't anticipating that many.

My practice for clients who are not professional editors, is that no one sees unedited files. There should be a quality filter where if it does not meet your standards for client work, it shouldn't be shown.
This is not universal, wire services, Nat Geo etc, get the whole take, but they are experienced editors.

It should also be covered in your contract, that clients receive a large and meaningful selection of proof level files.

I don't know how good you are with computers. I've used Piwigo (open source) for this purpose. Just a small server (or old desktop) is required. You can also use the Cloud-hosted version but this is not a free service...

When I had a studio after I went digital I shot tethered and had my clients review the photos at the time of the shoot. I had them pick 12 they were happy with and made a PDF proofsheet of those for them to make the final choice. Sometimes they didn't like the initial photos and I was able to adjust whatever was bothering them. There were times when I was shooting film that a few subjects didn't like any of the photos for some reason and I just had to reshoot. This was mostly for business portraits.

That is a good practice

There are several services who will post your images privately for you, then allow your clients to purchase downloads, prints, and other products you sell. Then they will do fulfillment, ship direct to customer, and send you your price, less their cost for the service.

Fine Art America is one. But there are many.
