From Viking: Šibenik is the oldest Croatian city on the Dalmatian Coast. The remarkable architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage Site spans the centuries, having witnessed the rise and fall of empires, from Byzantine to Venetian. In its remarkably preserved Old Town, narrow cobblestone streets lead past medieval houses and churches, all surrounded by four historic fortresses, including the imposing St. Nicholas Fortress. St. James Cathedral, built by several architects in the Gothic and Renaissance styles over a century, is the most important Renaissance structure in Croatia.
My wife had a good friend in college who was from Split and we were really looking forward to this port call. We had planned to visit Split in 1973 and had visas, but it ended up too much of a challenge, as it was behind the Iron Curtain as part of Yugoslavia then. We had talked to people (in Spain as I recall) who had gone there and they told us to expect to spend about a week at the border waiting to enter the country and another week at the border waiting to leave.
We booked (and paid for) the 7 hour excursion “Historic Split & Diocletian’s Palace.” Neither of us were feeling well and it was hot (above 90F) so we decided to not push it, as we wanted to be well for our next port call and disembarking in Venice. The cruise in and out of the port of Šibenik was the most beautiful of the cruise. So, another “at sea day” in port. It was a relaxing day on the beautiful Viking Sky as we recovered.

Thanks for the thumbs up Longshadow.
Water and landscapes are my favorite, Dennis.
Another excellent set Dennis. Especially the last one. Our kids took a Backroads bike trip to Croatia last year and loved it.

Thanks Mark. We would like to see more than we saw from the ship. The barber I went to until he retired owns property on the island of Hvar (as does his brother), just off of the coast near Split and from his photos, it is beautiful. I'm sure we passed it on our way into Sibenik.
