Disk Image

I don't understand. I'm using Macrium Reflect to make a disk image of C. It's going to take ten more hours. The C drive contains about 170GB of data. If I copied all the files from C to Q, it wouldn't take that long (I don't think). What's going on?

Are you sure it's not making a track-for-track copy?
That will copy EVERY TRACK, whether it contains data or not. EVERY TRACK.

Well, maybe that's what "image" does......
A literal copy, of all tracks.

Macrium imaging software doesn't copy the licensing for photoshop and autocad correctly. The clone drive has no license.

A quick synopsis - A disk image copies the operating system, including the boot sector, and all of the hidden files and programs that are needed to run the system. These files and programs are normally hidden and you need to get inside the operating system to see them. It also copies all of the programs and apps you have installed along with add-on’s that those programs have installed. It copies the registry which is a critical component of the operating system. The program will map the image to be an exact copy of the C drive so it has to read the drive, calculate the location of all the data bits and write them in the same sequence to the receiving medium. Also note, disk image is a great way to restore a corrupted system but be aware that it is tied to that specific system and generally cannot be used on another system.

Strange if it does a track-for-track copy.......
I would imagine what's on the source goes to the destination, track-for-track.
How does it know "not to copy" those particular tidbits of information?

Yeah but somehow the program no longer work. I have several programs are that way. Some how the programs figured out the drive is a clone.

I have some program that it's worth to buy an identical computer and clone it to have an extra copy as the cost of the program is several times the cost of a typical PC. When I retired I uninstalled and transfer the license of a number of software on my laptop. The total cost would be around $25,000. So if I could clone them I would spend $2000 or so for another laptop and clone them. But.. they don't work. I tried.

Dang.....

I wonder if the program(s) grab the serial/model of the computer when installed.
That could account for it/them not working on another computer, they would not match.

Perhaps the serial number. The model numbers are identical. I intentionally picked 2 identical computers so that the clone would work perfectly without any drivers issue. And no drivers issue just the programs don't work.

I'll go with it grabbing the computer SN, that would be the only difference between the two?
Nasty on their part, one can't put it on a replacement computer.......
Poor form.

Jerry, if you are also using McAfee as your anti-virus, and have recently done a McAfee update...that is the problem. If you have any other anti-virus program, perhaps there are similar scenarios. I had such and got with Macrium support. The problem is that Macrium update removes 2 Excludes from McAfee, and thus Macrium goes bonkers and scans everything over and over...thus 10 hours. They provided a fix, which has to be done EVERYTIME you do a Macrium update:

Macrium Reflect – Problem:

Doing FULL backup to external HD taking 10 hours instead of approx. 2 hours.
Exclude 2 files from scan in McAfee:
Follow the instructions in the link below to exclude from Real-Time Scanning, 2 exe files in McAfee
https://www.mcafee.com/support/?articleId=TS102056&page=shell&shell=article-view

The files to exclude:
C:\Program Files\Macrium\Reflect\reflect.exe
C:\Program Files\Macrium\Reflect\reflectbin.exe

I haven't done this for a while and it won't work if the software is no longer supported, but I remember for some you were to do a specific type of removal and notify the maker to move to another computer. And yes, I do believe it know exactly what CPU it is running on. Many now allow software on as many computers as you wish, but only one copy or a specific number can be used at one time.

As I remember, cloning will also copy disk errors if there are any.

Laplink makes a program which movers programs between computers, it works pretty well, but I have had to fix a few that didn't quite work/move everything, for the program to work, but still better than trying to reinstall hundreds of programs.
