Quicken Renewal???

After paying almost $80 to use Quicken for another year, I'm thinking about going back to an older version. Despite all the updates that I've downloaded, I've experienced no improvement in the program. If I can install an older version, I might start fresh with that. If I have a lot of free time, I might begin entering data for some accounts.

I've read that Quicken 16 was a cut-off point and is compatible with older versions - or maybe newer versions. At that point, Quicken took over from Intuit. The latest version I have is 14, and I don't know if I want to buy a used Quicken 16, or maybe I would have to get 17. "Cut-off point" isn't very precise.

Wow! I've paid $355 to use Quicken since I bought Quicken 14 ($59) in 2013. No more! I didn't realize I had been paying so long.

I often don't see the new version better than the old version. Perhaps the reasons to pay for new version is that the old version doesn't work with new OS and old OS can no longer goes on the internet. So you want to browse the web you have to upgrade the OS and upgrading the OS makes your old software no longer works.
I am playing with DOS and Windows 3.11 right now and I found that for a spreadsheets I don't think I need anything more than the Excel 5. With Excel 365 a lot of features I don't need or know how to use.

I've been renewing every year so I can keep using the same data file. If you stop paying, I think you can continue using the program, but...?

No, but there is a downside to not renewing. I'll have to look into that again.

EDITED: Wow! There's no real drqawback.

"if you do not renew the subscription, there is no download capability. You can't download from your banks, securities, etc. you have a glorified checkbook which you will have to manually enter all the transactions.

the download features are only available with a subscriptiuon (Quicken has to pay for all the infrastucture to may that occur, so the subscription helps pay for your fair share)

you also don't get the benefit of any future features or enhancements.

So you have to ask yourself is if the convenience of downloading the transactions (and not manually entering them) is worth $70 / year......

I've also seen other posts where there are annoying ads taking up about 25% of the screen encouraging the subscription....."

I never downloaded anything, all manual entry. I don't have a ton of stuff to enter.

No, I don't need the "convenience".....
It's (v.2007) a multi-account register with reports, what "enhancements"?....

I still use 14 with no problems. Been using it since it came out. It more than meets my needs.

Oh yes! The reasons for renewing is always about the internet. I buy a copy of TurboTax every year because I need to download my wife online trading. She made very little but she made way to many trades so entering by hand is a pain.

We have been using Quicken for years. It’s an old version but the only thing we do with is our checkbook register. I do my taxes with TurboTax and probably done that for 21 years.

Actually what you lose is the ability to directly connect Quicken to your accounts at the financial institution and download within quicken. If you can download from your bank website a QFX datafile then it will still import into quicken. Manual entry is not required.

True, if one can get the file.
I <manually> enter info as it transpires, that way all values are current when I look at the accounts.
I download the bank statement only to reconcile.
I've never downloaded information for import into Quicken,
