When you live in an arid or semi arid zone where rain falls are months or sometimes years apart it is always a pleasure when the rain finally arrives. It is even more exciting if enough rain falls to cause the normally dry creeks and rivers to flow as occurred in Central Australia during the last week of March 2024. Alice Springs airport recorded over 180 mm (7 inches) of rain over seven days which is almost 80% of the annual average.

5 Normally dry 16 Mile Creek upstream side. So named because it is located 16 miles North of Alice Srpings where it is crossed by the Stuart Highway.

6 Normally dry 16 Mile Creek downstream side of the Highway. The Stuart Highway passes through Alice Springs and is the main road that connects Port Augusta in the South of South Australia to Darwin in the North.

7 Stuart Highway 16 mile creek crossing. Flooding at this location resulted in the road being closed for two days some time before I took this Photo. Note rain spots in the photo. I did have the forsight to screw on a filter in anticipation of rain.

Thank you for your comments AzPicLady. Central Australia is cattle country and I expect there are a few station (ranch) owners that have also been dancing in the rain - not that they would admit it.

Thank you for commenting NMGal. Most of the water will be absorbed into the ground much to the delight of the surrounding cattle station (ranch) owners. Good rain like we have just had will top-up water reserves and bring on a much needed boost to the natural grasses that the cattle feed on.

Thanks for commenting Curmudgeon. Central Australia is cattle country. May be the cattle station (ranch) owners will engage you to perform some rain dances next time there is a dry spell and feed and water for the cattle becomes scarce.
