I recently picked up a Panasonic SZ7. 10x optical, plus a VERY good intelligent digital, 14mp, but it doesn't use AA's. Battery life seems to be very good, but I may look to pick up a spare battery just in case.
Very compact, awesome LCD settings that eliminate a lot of glare problems. Simple and easy to set up. $99 at Kmart this week, Target also has the same camera.

I also use the Panasonic SZ7. It's very very small -- which is one of the main reasons I got it. Sometimes it seems almost too small to handle and I have small hands. It focuses quick and after focusing there is very little shutter lag. I find the pic quality good.
I'm happy with it, and would choose again.

Canon has a nice range, always quality pictures. AA batteries seem to last as long as you'r not constantly reviewing the pictures or video.

redford,
I recently purchased a Canon Powershot SX240 HS similar to the SX260 HS but without the GPS function. I needed something to stick in my pocket & carry everywhere without lugging my big camera around. I am very happy with it. It didn't break the bank got it on sale. Only short coming is the battery life 240 shots, so for $6.99 I got a couple spares from CA-Battery in Fremont CA. Battery life no longer an issue. Drop the GPS function and batteries last longer. Max zoom 20x Optical but can be extended to 80x using Digital zoom. Quality so so. This camera has many features to play around with. 12 MP. Its worth looking at. Compare others as jerryC41 suggests on snapsort.com that way you can make an informed decision based on your personal needs.

I recently got an Olympus SZ-12 14mg, 24x optical zoom, macro, many great features but VERY user friendly. I got it at Walmart for less than 200.00.
I love it. Maybe you can google it online to see the rest of the features.

This is (or was) a forum for serious photgraphic enthusiasts. Check out consumer reports or use your cell phone. Point and shoot cameras are the equivalent of muzak and the old disposable cameras. They are toys and should be purchased at toy shops.

I have seen a LOT of P&S photos that are better than many of the dSLR results posted on this forum!

Either your eyes are bad or the photographers are bad. There is no way on earth a point and shot can compare with my camera or any DSLR made by sony, pentax, canono or nikon. Unless you are legally blind.

Why do I keep seeing over and over on this forum and on camera reviews that it's not the camera that takes quality photos, it's the brains behind it??

Coming from someone who hasn't really posted anything any better than the P&S or Bridge camera pics.

It would appear that you wouldn't know the difference if it hit you in the face. There is no need to dignify your responses with an intelligent answer as it is obvious you lack the mental and visual acuity to decipher it.

Please enlighten me. I've never seen a requirement like this to belong to and participate in the UHH gang.
I thought all you had to do was have an interest in photography.

Most accomplished photographers see the attributes of various cameras as simply different tools. Much as a mecjhanic might have wrtenches, screwdrivers and hammers. Cameras, bodies and lenses are simply tools.
There are tools for different jobs, ocassions.
To disparage one camera is to indicate that one has too little knowledge and or experrience to appreciate what a valuable tool is capable of.

As for "toys" I invite you to look at Alaskan's work and see just what quality a "toy" can produce. Ivan has posted a wide variety of images with bridge cameras as well as DSLR on this forum and is universaly respected as a quality photographer.
His wildlife images are astounding.

Turn the ego down a few notches sonny
