Tried to shoot this branch of a fallen dead tree several times but couldn't get the right shot. This was taken pre- dawn, facing west on a 15 second exposure. It was fairly dark out, but with a 15 second exposure the sensor picks up a lot of light. I thought the water came out pretty cool, looks primordial.

Excellent artistic choice! Excellent descriptive word, primordial: "existing at or from the beginning of time; primeval."

I love the look of the water and the gnarliness of the branch - and you did an awesome job, Dan

I hope you're happy with this image. I think it's great. A lot of people freak out when they see water thus presented (my advice: don't look) but I like the contrast between the soft long-exposed waves and that sharply focused jagged branch. If this were my photo I'd be proud.

It may not have been exactly what you were looking for, but it's well done regardless.

Now this begs the question, where were you when I was trying to get sunrise shots at Waimea Beach? For those not familiar with the location, it's on the North Shore near Haliewa.

Okay, the Oahu natives are rolling their eyes. It was early, okay?

Not sure why anyone would freak out. A long exposure adds the element of time to a shot. Just because our eyes can’t see it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. The photo proves it. It’s perhaps the only thing the camera can do that the human eye can’t do as lot better.

I probably wasn’t clear in my remarks; it took a few visits but I was very happy with this shot when I finally got it!
