The missing link (for me). I see my next lens barring major flaws:

Too long, too heavy, too much extension at 400mm, too SLOW at 400mm, that lens is NOT a travel lens unless you are intending to have your neck massaged each night while your on vacation.

Big MEH...it's a kit lens in the end.

It hits f/8 at 200mm... big MEH.

I still don’t understand the reasoning behind the (extreme) pricing of the new lenses for older Nikon DSL’s?
My uncle made lenes in his garage lab, back in the (1940’s) from scratch. A few of his lenses were mounted on the early NASA satellites that went up. —-He only had a high school diploma.

I remember when they came out with Turbo Pascal. He priced it at either $29 or $39+, everyone said he was crazy. The entire world market was something like 25,000 copies. He sold 250,000 copies of the compiler in a few months. Market size can drive costs, but the reverse is also very true. There are many technical books like this, priced so high that even researchers budgets don't allow for their purchase.

Sometimes Ill really agree with you, like now !

I have a pocket size zoom camera that does that, so sespite its great portability it never actually gets ported. Make it huge, heavy, expensive, and slapping a Nikon label on it would only make it worse.

Matt Grainer was comparing it to the Nikon 24-200mm f/4-6.3.

Well yeah...who is buying a 200mm f/6.3 anyways?
One meh lens looks good next to another meh lens...must be the marketing play here.

I remember Turbo C, Super light and fast.
And complete- you didn't need to purchase modules.
And cheap! One of it's selling/marketing points.
It came with the printed manual. It wasn't worth stealing. You'd have to buy the book anyway.

I think Tammy makes a good 18-400

They do and I have one (for years) but the problem is that I have an older version that can't be updated (or so I'm told), which means it doesn't work with the new mirrorless. It has the typical long zoom flaws which I forgive because it's the perfect lens for my use on the D7500. Now I've got a Z7ii and it no longer works, so if I can have a native Z mount (no FTZ needed) that's got fewer of the flaws and works as intended in about the same package, I'll be a happy camper.

f/8 at 200-400 - nah, I will pass. Jared the Fro guy did a nice review of this lens too. Of all the Z lenses Nikon introduced in the last year, this one is my least favorite. As long as you can afford it two lenses are better choices, the 24-120 f/4 and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6, covering this range.

Too long when extended, too much plastic, too slow at both ends, too heavy, too much zoom range, too much money, just too much too late.

It's design is just right for Nikon's needs right now...they want to capture the rubes...hey...rubes have money too...
