With respect to astrophotography, anyone have experience using both the EF vs RF canon 70-200 F/2.8 lenses? Or for that matter, how do they compare with Tamron’s SP 70-200mm F/2.8? I have been unable to find a thoughtful companion.

They are both great lenses. The RF is lighter, effectively sharper (better IS and optics) and doesn’t need the adapter. It is not internally focusing. For astrophotography I would find 70 not wide enough and 200 not long enough. Your mileage may vary.

I used a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 adapted to Sony full frame cameras for several years. Beautiful lens for most any type of shooting. I also had a Sony 27-200 f/2.8; not nearly as good.

100-200mm is a great range for a lot of nebulas in the night sky. The North America nebula would be a good target for both full frame and crop mode. 70-200 also works very well for the Orion nebula.

There is a RF 24-240mm lens. The optics aren’t as good as the 70-200.

That was the same with the Sony 24-240mm lens; nice range but not the greatest image quality.

Thanks. I have a 14mm F/2.5 Irix and 20mm F/1.8 Sigma which are good for Milky Way landscape images. I also have a star tracker and looking to capture images of, say Andromeda or the Orion Nebula—nothing especially technical. I like the weight of the RF, but not sure how it compares to the image quality of the EF 70-200 III. Thanks again!

Excellent suggestion. I’m getting tired of the Milky Way landscape and because I have a star tracker, looking to capture images — without using a telescope, etc. I have my eye on Andromeda and Orion but hadn’t considered the North American nebula—nothing especially technical. Thanks again!

That RF 24-240mm is an F/-6.3 and not fast, so I wouldn’t even consider it for astrophotography. The 70-200 is an F/2.8 which, I think, is about as good as I can currently get with a long lens and the weight (and cost).

The 70-200mm is a great lens with excellent glass but the person was asking about using a wider lens and a longer telephoto. I agree, not better Astro photography but it’s an option.
