Are you driving from Prague to Berlin, taking a train, or flying? Nuremberg is a wonderful stop, or at least it was back in '99. Between the old town and the museum, I could spend at least three days there. Bamberg is a beautiful little town.

German museology is first rate. Every museum we've gone to there has been well lit (depending on what was being exhibited), had an informative card, and was nicely displayed. Berlin has Museum Island.

Berlin is one of my top ten cities. We were there in February about twelve years ago. If you're interested in Cold War history, do check out the various watch towers and Soviet monuments. I maxed out my SD Card and had to stop taking photos. Checkpoint Charlie is a bit hokey now with the costumed interpreters who would like a euro or two to pose for you. I'm not sure if they're allowing it still, but back then, I had my passport stamped for East Germany. The airport security guard shook his head when he looked at my passport on the way home.

Not everyone speaks English and some who do won't. When we went to the information desk at the airport, neither person there spoke English. I got by with my minimal German and their even more limited English. With today's phone technology, you could just type in your query on Google translate, show it to them, and they could respond the same way.

If you take a direct route from Prague to Berlin, Dresden would on the way. It is worth a stop. If you are interested in Reformation history, Wittenberg is a must.

If you take the detour via Nürnberg, Bamberg is a must, as already pointed out. Erfurt also is a beautiful city.

You are is for a treat. One thing you must try is currywurst mit brochen. Seriously there is so much to see in Berlin. I was stationed there when the wall went up. Feb.1961 until Aug.1963. Returned in 1998,2006 and 2010. You tube has excellent videos on Berlin. Make a list.

Take in a Documentation Museum. They have several. Really informative description of how the Nazi cult (really is what they call it) took over power.

I agree on the Dresden suggestion. It has a long history with very gothic architecture. I lived in Hamburg, but made a road trip with my cousin and his partner, from Hamburg to Prague. We stopped over to tour Dresden - a beautiful city on the Elbe. It was late September, so we went to Munich for Octoberfest when leaving Prague for return to Germany. You mentioned mid-October. . . you might catch the last few days of Octoberfest by taking a side trip to Munich - a crazy memorable event!

If you do make the decision to visit Munich, nearby is Dachau that’s definitely worth a visit. Also Neuschwanstein Castle, which is dazzling. And while in Munich, who can resist a visit to Hofbräuhaus. As for Octoberfest, it’s a whole lot of crazy. A guide told us while we were visiting the area 5 or 6 years ago that there’s a very active “lost and found” area during the event that end up with all kinds of stuff including wheelchairs, crutches, kids, etc. And be prepared to spend a goodly amount for accommodations. Her suggestion was it’s best avoided, Octoberfest, that is. But….it’s a really nice city and the “square” is impressive.

Yeah, we also did Dachau (depressing) and Neuschwanstein. . . the Lost and Found section at the very crowded Oktoberfest was hilarious!

2-3 hours does not give you a lot of time in Dresden. I would definitely visit the Zwinger, the Hofkirche, and the Frauenkirche. Walk along the terrace overlooking the Elbe. That's your 2-3 hours. If you travel by train, Dresden Hbf (main station) is an easy ten-minute walk from the center. The Grünes Gewölbe is a world-class museum, but you need half a day for that. Plus you have to book a ticket ahead of time.

Meißen would be a lovely alternative, particularly if you travel by car. But your timeline does not allow for a stop in both Dresden and Meißen.

I want to thank everyone for their feedback which was helpful.
We are leaving early from Prague and stopping in Meissen on way to Berlin. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can spend a few hours enjoying the town, culture, and history. Then on to Berlin when we will be able to check into our hotel.
