I've always been very interested in macro photography. I now have a new attachment that has a focus stacking function so, I'm now looking for a decent macro lens. Does anyone have any advice?

Quite depends on what you want to photograph - I use a 55 for things like gems and stamps, a 105 or 180 for flowers and bees - I have a 200 and a 500 that I don't use as much, as well as a couple extreme close ups that don't focus to infinity - if just one, probably the 105 - can't much imagine why anyone would want something wider than a 55.

I am most interested in photographing things like flowers, mushrooms, insects and the like. I have noticed that photos of things like that are generally shot with lenses in the 100mm range but in my shopping research, I've seen lenses as wide as 40mm. Your advice is much appreciated.

Look at the working distance of the lens 40-60 mm you have very little distance
I use Nikkor 200mm f4 macro its very sharp but even used they are not what I would call cheap.
Check B&H for a used Nikon 105 macro f2.8 af they are under $300

Depnds on what you consider affordable. The Sigma 105 f/2.8 DG OS HSM Macro is excellent. I picked up a mint used one from Adorama for $439.00 USD

IMO Nikkor should be your first choice since you're shooting Nikon with as long a focal range as you can afford. Nothing wrong with refurbished or even used from a reliable vendor. That said I am completely satisfied with my Tamron 90mm macro I bought used from B&H

I'm looking at a max of $500 so everything I've seen here so far is acceptable. I definitely want to stay with a Nikkor lens.

I really like my 85mm macro on my 7200.

I favor a Nikon 60mm macro & 105mm macro both are f/2.8 and bought used. I also use a 4x and 10x microscope planer lens for extreme close-ups. You'll need a few few extra parts to adapt to a Nikon but the cost is under $50.

I use a Nikkor 105mm macro on my Nikon D7200 with great results.

You might also check out the Raynox DCR-250 Macro that attaches to the front any 52 -67mm lens and multiplies the magnification 2.5 times for around 70 bucks. Ive used it on my Nikon 50mm 1.8 and Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art lens with great results.

I bought the Nikkor 85 mm DX macro lens for my D7100 and then D7500. Great lens in my opinion. Not overly fast, but lightweight, easy to focus, good range of apertures (all the way to f/40). I use it for macro and as a general pupose 85 mm lens. As I age, the weight of my gear is becoming and increasing issue, so that may bias me. However, the lens you use is better than the best lens you don't use. :)

Based on what I've seen so far, I'm leaning toward the 105mm, f2.8 macro lens.
